Emily M. Aaldenberg, a PhD student of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, has been selected by the Glass and Optical Materials Division (GOMD) of the American Ceramic Society (ACerS) to receive this year’s Norbert J. Kreidl Award for her contribution to understanding the origins of fast surface stress relaxation in glass. The  Norbert J. Kreidl Award for Young Scholars is the highest honor GOMD bestows upon a graduate student, recognizing research excellence in glass science. Emily will present her award lecture at the 25th International Congress on Glass (ICG 2019) in Boston, MA on June 9-14, 2019, hosted by the GOMD.

Emily had also received the Rensselaer Graduate Fellowship in 2015-2016 and Corning Graduate Fellowship in 2016- 2019. Supervised by Professor Minoru Tomozawa, Emily has integrated small angle x-ray scattering with cross-over experiments to provide key insight into the role of composition fluctuations in glass mechanical strength and fatigue behavior.

In the recent past, two other graduate students from the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute had also received the same Award. In 2014 Peter Lezzi in Professor Minoru Tomozawa’s group, and in 2015 Michael Guerette in Professor Liping Huang’s group were honored by the GOMD. Dr. Lezzi is now working at Corning Inc.; Dr. Guerette is at the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Science
