Prof. Jian Shi authors a Nature article on the topic of strain engineering in unconventional semiconductors. This is a news & views letter to express his viewpoint on a recent work published on Nature magazine. In this letter, he reviews the history and points out opportunities and challenges of strain engineering of perovskite halide materials. In past several years, Dr. Shi and his group have successfully developed varieties of exotic approaches (e.g. van der Waals epitaxy; dynamic strain engineering) to strain soft crystals.
